Dubai's cameras sit on every major road — Sheikh Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road — and on many inner-city streets. Most are fixed radars on poles or gantries. Many do, but you cannot rely on seeing a flash. Modern radars record your plate day and night, some with infrared, and the fine arrives by SMS or in the police app — often days later. The only reliable warning is knowing where the camera is before you reach it.

A radar or laser measures your speed as you pass; if you are over the trigger speed, a camera records the plate and the violation is issued automatically. Average-speed systems work differently: they time you between two points. Read how speed cameras work.

An average speed camera (section control) measures the time you take between two cameras and calculates your average speed over the distance. Slowing down only at the camera does not help. Yes, on both the Dubai and the Abu Dhabi stretches, and the rules change at the border: Dubai applies a 20 km/h radar buffer, Abu Dhabi none. Read driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

Most UAE highways are posted at 100 to 140 km/h; a few Abu Dhabi highways were posted at 160 km/h until recent reductions to 140 km/h. Always follow the sign on the road — limits change between sections. See UAE speed limits 2026.

Yes — Dubai's radars are commonly set 20 km/h above the posted limit, so on a 100 km/h road the radar triggers at 121 km/h. The buffer is a grace margin, not a right: it is not in the law, it varies, and it can change without notice. Read the 20 km/h buffer explained.

No. Abu Dhabi removed its speed buffer in 2018: the radar triggers at 1 km/h over the posted limit. In fog, limits drop to 80 km/h and the radars follow automatically. See Abu Dhabi speed cameras.

No. The posted limit is the legal limit; the buffer only describes where many radars are set today. It differs by road and emirate, disappears at the Abu Dhabi border and in school and work zones, and can be removed at any time. Ghost shows your speed against the posted limit, never against a buffer.

In Abu Dhabi, limits on major roads are cut to 80 km/h when visibility drops, shown on electronic signs, and the radars reset to the lower limit automatically. See fog speed limits in Abu Dhabi.

Only where a sign sets one. Driving below a posted minimum speed is a Dh400 fine. Abu Dhabi removed the 120 km/h minimum on the E311 in April 2025. Read minimum speed limits.

Abu Dhabi lowered three roads on 9 February 2026 (parts of the E22 Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road and the E30) and a 6 km stretch of the E311 from 120 to 100 km/h on 14 September 2026. Full list in new speed limits in 2026.

24. Black points are counted over a 12-month period; reach 24 and your licence is suspended or the case goes to court. Serious speeding alone brings 6, 12 or 23 points. See black points explained.

Yes. The fine is linked to the car's plate, so the rental company receives it and charges it to you, usually with an admin fee. Read driving in Dubai as a visitor.

Apps that show where fixed cameras are, like navigation apps with camera alerts, are widely used in the UAE and we are not aware of any rule that bans them. What is prohibited are radar detectors and jammers — devices that sense or block police radar. See radar detectors vs apps.

No. Radar detectors are prohibited under UAE traffic law and are confiscated, including at customs. Ghost is not a radar detector: it reads a database of known camera locations and never senses police equipment.

No. Ghost does not detect radar signals. It compares your GPS position with a licensed database of known fixed cameras and average-speed zones and warns you before you reach them.

Ghost is available now in the UAE; more countries follow. Speed camera warnings are not legal everywhere — in Switzerland Ghost gives no warnings at all. Check the rules where you drive.

Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 took effect on 29 March 2025: the minimum driving age fell to 17, and penalties for hit-and-run, jaywalking in high-speed zones and driving under the influence became much stricter. Read the new traffic law.

On iPhone, yes: with Apple Family Sharing the subscriber can share Ghost with up to five family members at no extra cost. Google Play does not offer family sharing for subscriptions.

In your Apple or Google account subscription settings, not inside the app. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
