Turkey’s general speed limits for cars are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way intercity roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 130 or 140 km/h on motorways, depending on who operates them. The Interior Ministry offers a route map that shows radar points, speed corridors and control points between provinces, according to NTV. We found no official national list of exact positions.

What are the speed limits in Turkey?

The highways agency, KGM, publishes the legal limits by vehicle type, and the figures in the table above apply to cars.

  • Motorways: 130 km/h applies on motorways operated by KGM and 140 km/h on motorways operated under the build-operate-transfer model. KGM notes that these limits were raised following an Interior Ministry letter of 2 June 2022.
  • Signs come first: Article 51 of Law No 2918 tells drivers to keep to the limits in the regulation unless a different decision has been made and marked.
  • Other vehicles: minibuses and buses have lower limits, for example 100 km/h on motorways, so check the KGM table if you are not driving a car.

The rules changed in 2026. Law No 7574, published in the Official Gazette on 27 February 2026, rewrote Article 51 and now measures excess speed in fixed km/h bands. The Interior Minister confirmed in March 2026 that this replaced the former 10 per cent approach, so older guides that describe a percentage are out of date.

What kinds of speed cameras does Turkey use?

Turkey uses fixed radar points, average-speed corridors and mobile radar checks. We found no dated official count of all of them, so we give none here. On 19 March 2026 Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said that warning signs would be posted for radar checks on highways over the holiday, according to NTV.

Do Turkish authorities publish radar locations?

Partly: the Interior Ministry shows radar points along a chosen route, but we found no official list of exact positions. The ministry’s website has a tool called “İller arası radar ve kontrol noktası uygulama sayıları”. According to NTV and Yeni Birlik in March 2026, you enter a start and an end point and the tool shows radar points, speed corridors and control points along that route, updated about every 30 minutes. Yeni Birlik’s example from Istanbul Beyoğlu to Ankara Altındağ listed 3 radar points, 29 control points and 3 speed corridors. The ministry page did not open for us on 30 October 2026, so this description relies on those reports.

Are speed camera apps legal in Turkey?

Turkish law prohibits any device that locates speed measuring equipment or warns the driver of it, and we found no specific rule on phone apps. Article 51 of Law No 2918, as rewritten by Law No 7574, bans the manufacture, import and keeping in vehicles of any device that detects the location of equipment used to establish whether speed limits have been exceeded, or that warns the driver (text checked on 30 October 2026). The text does not mention software or phone apps, and we found no ruling on that point, so check locally.

What should visiting drivers know about Turkey?

Speeds are in km/h, and the limit that counts is the one on the sign. The motorway limit depends on the operator, so the same journey can move between 130 km/h and 140 km/h sections. Inspect any hire car before you set off, because Article 51 applies to devices kept in the vehicle. Travelling on from Europe? See our guides to Poland and Italy.
