Kuwait posts 120 km/h on main roads such as the Seventh Ring Road and between 45 and 80 km/h at intersections, so a single trip can cross several limits. Cameras include point-to-point units, which time vehicles between two fixed points, along with AI and portable cameras. Tougher traffic rules have applied since 22 April 2025.

What are the speed limits in Kuwait?

We found no published national table, so follow the sign on each road. On the Seventh Ring Road the limit is 120 km/h: the Ministry of Interior said in June 2019 that a reduction to 60 km/h was only a temporary step for maintenance. Drivers slowed to 60 or 80 km/h near the work zone, then returned to the normal limit once past it.

Intersections are lower. Brigadier Tawhid Al-Kandari of the Interior Ministry told Al-Rai in 2021 that the limit at intersections ranges between 45 and 80 km/h, with some at 45 km/h and others at 60 or 80 km/h, as Times Kuwait reported. He urged drivers to watch the road signs.

There is a minimum as well as a maximum. Kuwait Times reported in April 2025 that driving below the minimum speed limit is also a violation.

What kinds of speed cameras does Kuwait use?

Kuwait uses point-to-point cameras, AI cameras, vehicle-mounted cameras and portable cameras. Kuwait Times reported on 21 April 2025 that point-to-point cameras time how long a vehicle takes between two fixed points. The same report listed sixth-generation AI cameras that detect phone use and seat belt offences, vehicle-mounted cameras on highways and in remote areas, and a battery-powered unit moved between high-violation zones.

On numbers, Lt Col Abdullah Buhasan of the traffic awareness department said in November 2024 that up to 252 of the newer cameras were planned, with several already working, according to Kuwait Times. Interior Ministry statistics carried by Arab Times in June 2026 show speeding violations down 65 percent, from 1,618,739 to 561,820, in the year after the new law began. Arab Times also reported on 28 May 2026 that the ministry said speeding will not be tolerated.

Are speed camera apps legal in Kuwait?

We found no specific rule on speed camera apps or detector devices in Kuwait. Decree-Law No. 5 of 2025 amended the 1976 traffic law, but none of the reports we read mention such devices, and we could not read the full text. This is not a statement that they are permitted. Checked on 30 October 2026; check locally with the General Traffic Department.

What should visiting drivers know?

  • Speeds are in km/h, and limits change often between a ring road and its junctions.
  • Watch for slip roads and intersections, where the limit can fall to 45 km/h.
  • Keep to the limit for the whole stretch. A point-to-point camera measures the time between two fixed points, not one moment.
  • Follow temporary signs at roadworks, even on a road normally signed at 120 km/h.
