Holding or using a phone while driving is fined Dh800 and four black points in the UAE. It is no longer a matter of being seen by a patrol: AI cameras detect it automatically.

How the cameras see it

Abu Dhabi Police have deployed AI cameras for phone use and seat belts since 2021. Dubai Police’s intelligent traffic system, presented in October 2025, detects phone use among five violations; its AI radars look for hand movements and the light of a phone screen.

Why it matters

Abu Dhabi Police say a driver distracted by a phone is eight times more likely to crash. In 2024 the emirate recorded six accidents directly linked to phone use and 510 caused by general distraction.

How to stay hands-free

  • Set navigation before you drive and mount the phone.
  • Use CarPlay or Android Auto for calls, music and maps.
  • Choose apps that do not need you to look or touch: Ghost runs in the background, warns with one tone, and shows the detail on the car screen or your Apple Watch.
