In the Netherlands and Belgium, Flitsmeister is almost a household name. It is an all-in-one traffic app: camera alerts, traffic jams, incidents, navigation and even paid parking, with much of its traffic information reported by its community. Ghost is built for one thing only, the warning before a known fixed speed camera or average-speed zone, and it brings that warning to 130 countries with more than 125,000 speed cameras stored on your phone.

What does Flitsmeister offer?

Flitsmeister does a lot, and it does it with a big community behind it. The company says the app is used by more than 3 million people, and drivers can report a camera they spot and rate the reports of others.

  • Alerts: fixed and mobile speed cameras, section controls, traffic jams, roadworks, accidents and emergency vehicles.
  • Navigation: routes that take the current traffic into account.
  • Parking: start and stop a paid parking session from the app.
  • Sound packs: optional paid sound packs for the alerts.

What is free in Flitsmeister, and what needs PRO?

The basic app is free, and Google Play labels it as containing ads. Flitsmeister’s own subscription page puts several things into PRO: no ads, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, your average speed in section controls, automatic start and your current speed. PRO Plus adds trip history on top. Both are subscriptions that you can cancel monthly.

So if you want Flitsmeister on your car screen without ads, you are looking at a subscription too. With Ghost, that is simply how it works from the first day: one plan, every feature.

Does Flitsmeister work outside the Netherlands?

Partly. Flitsmeister lists its full service, with fixed and mobile cameras, section controls, traffic jams and incidents, for 12 countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Italy and England. In the rest of Europe and in Turkey, it offers route planning, incident reporting and the locations of permanent speed cameras. Its coverage page lists no countries beyond Europe and Turkey.

This is where Ghost pulls ahead. Ghost covers more than 125,000 speed cameras in 130 countries, so the same app that warns you on your daily commute keeps warning you on a road trip far beyond Europe. Because the data is stored on your phone, it keeps working without signal, from mountain passes to long empty highways.

How does Ghost warn you?

Ghost runs in the background while Google Maps, Apple Maps or any other navigation app stays in front. When a known camera comes up, Ghost steps in.

  1. About 700 m ahead: a banner and a tone over your music.
  2. At 250 m: a clear second warning with the exact distance on screen.
  3. On every screen: your phone, CarPlay, Android Auto and your Apple Watch.

There is no voice that cuts into your music and no ad between you and the road. Just the warning you need, at the moment you need it. Curious how the cameras measure? Read how speed cameras work.

What does Ghost not do?

A fair comparison names this too. Ghost does not warn about police checks, it does not show traffic jams or incidents, and it does not navigate or handle parking. If you mostly drive in the Netherlands or Belgium and want live community reports of everything on the road, Flitsmeister is built for that.

Which app is right for your next drive?

If you want an all-in-one traffic app for the Low Countries, Flitsmeister is a strong pick. If you want a clear, dependable warning before every known fixed camera and average-speed zone, twice, in 130 countries, with CarPlay, Android Auto and Apple Watch included and no ads anywhere, Ghost is the better choice. Keep your favourite maps app on screen, and let Ghost watch the road ahead. Still comparing? See Ghost vs Blitzer.de and Ghost vs Waze.
